Re: What are you happy about right now?
Setting up a sweet A/V system for my in-laws. Mother-in-law was bothered by the spaghetti behind her old AV system, and the fact that even a Logitech Harmony smart remote didn't fully implement one-button task switching, such as going from watching cable to Blu-ray to Netflix.
She was also bothered that father-in-law signed them up for a cable package that came out to slightly over $300(!) USD a month.
I helped them become a cable-cutting family. I purchased an Intel Core i3 Alienware SteamBox PC, a USB Blu-ray drive, and a pretty sweet soundbar. I also split the SPDIF optical audio out into two - one to the soundbar, and the other to a PCM-to analog converter, which in turn split the signal to two Bluetooth transmitter.
Mother-in-law is starting to lose her hearing, so setting them up with BT headsets allows her to raise the volume without blasting my father-in-law, nor annoy the neighbors.
(Then again, she doesn't get along with her upstairs neighbor, who is the chairman of the HOA board, so this might have been viewed as a feature.
Lastly, all the spaghetti involved with all this magic is stashed in the box the Alienware PE came in, and the cables to-and-from the PC are all zip-tied into one central nervous system.
They're out of the house celebrating their 50th anniversary, so I'm just imagining the delight in their expression when they come home. This gives me a smile.
(Thanks for indulging my bragging.)

I didn't know anything about him other than his age, but when he stepped out of his truck with a breaking bad shirt on, I thought "yeah this guy is going to be just as awesome as I imagined."
He speaks in the same way he types, and that's just a little thing but it was neat to experience. If he lived in Florida, I'd visit him and his wife every chance I got. Great people.
Sorry for talking about you like you're not here TSM

Re: What are you happy about right now?
So in my recent adventures with 'Wendy', my 1994 Toyota Corolla Wagon, I went to Northern NJ to help Marder evaluate a 2015 VW Golf. After successfully getting me through the longest road trip I have done thus far, I gave her a well-deserved oil change and a brand-new air filter and now she feels a little less like the tired 21-year-old Toyota she was when I first got her. While she's far from KBB 'Excellent' condition, she feels just that little bit newer thanks to a nice clean air filter improving her response to being prodded with my right foot.

Re: What are you happy about right now?
Thoughts on Paris: I could very happily up sticks and move there. Back in Australia now, time to spend the next few days sorting photos and catching up here. Unpacking was fortunately easy: I didn't take much and my buying was pretty much restricted to a set of summer driving gloves and stocking up on Franco-Belgian comics...
- Spoiler:
From left to right:
- Astérix Chez Rahazade (English published title: Asterix and the Magic Carpet)... there was no way I was going to France and leaving without at least one Asterix book.
- Natacha Hôtesse de l'air... I had no idea what this was, but it was mixed in with Asterix and Tintin, and it looked amazing (or, at least, amazingly bad). Similar vein to Tintin, but with a female air hostess rather than a male journalist. It is too, also a series.
- Barbarella... because seriously, how could you not?

With good reason actually. Monty's gloves are basically analogues of a set my old man used to use rallying in the 70's, and which I started borrowing once I got a car. I've been looking around for my own pair for ages (couldn't borrow them any more once I moved out of home, and they didn't fit that well anyway), but two-tone gloves in that colouration have been surprisingly difficult to come by in my size. So now that I do have a set yes, they are very similar to the ones Monty uses.Thescarredman wrote:They do look rather like the ones she puts on when she's about to mess somebody up.

My 60+ mother was starting to find the vagaries of using a 30 year old, carburetted, Alfa as her daily drive a bit too much, so the folks set out to find a "sensible, practical, subtle, around-town, shopping trolley" to replace it with. This is what they came back with...
...a bright red, turbocharged hatch with black rims, body kit, dropped suspension and a sports exhaust.
Her choice, not Dad's.

Your family really seems to consist entirely of petrolheads, Alfisti. Your father had (or still has?) the Elise, you've got a BMW 1-series and an Alfetta, and now your mother is going to daily an Abarth...

Yeah, dad's still running the Elise... which is slowly getting more and more track-oriented. There's been murmurings of a Honda engine swap.MP5 wrote:Your family really seems to consist entirely of petrolheads, Alfisti. Oddly, mother is not actually much into cars or driving. She has however been living with father's car choices for coming up four decades now, so some of it has rubbed off. Everything else we tried her in was either too large (Giulietta, Clio), too soft and unresponsive (Swift, i20, Yaris), or too both (Corolla). She tried the regular Fiat 500, but preferred the Abarth... and with the seats folded she can fit her mahjong table in the back.

After lunch with taerkitty tomorrow, I am off to Paris for a week for the 24 Heures du Le Mans and the Paris Air Show.
The flying demonstrators for both Boeing (787-9) and Airbus (A350-900) will be Vietnam Airlines birds. It would be awesome to be able to see the two in formation.
Also, I found out that this existed:
I'll be booking a trip to Las Vegas in the near future.

Re: What are you happy about right now?
I don't mean to double-post, but I just realized that the first 9 minutes of "Robot Carnival" (opening credits and "Star Angel" title card not included) oddly syncs up pretty damn well with Tool's "Parabol/Parabola".
I think I may have found my next AMV idea.

Re: What are you happy about right now?
I have successfully done good. I've finally picked up all of Gunslinger Girl Manga Volumes 1-15, Gunslinger Girl Volumes 1-3+OVA and Il Teatrino.
Basically I have all the Anime and Manga, sans Il Teatrino OVA.
In addition I've nearly finished getting all the Noir Volumes (Volume 4 has yet to be located...).
I've spent a bit of money...last Tuesday:
Rest of the GSG volumes+OVA and a season or two of Noir is in the mail.
Add the fact that I got Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2 (and Valkyria Chronicles) makes me a very happy Polos

Excellent. Find a way to get paid to do something you love, and you'll never work a day in your life.

Ha, well I'm just enjoying the people and I like to mess with computers. Not sure IT is for me, but I don't mind it.Thescarredman wrote:Excellent. Find a way to get paid to do something you love, and you'll never work a day in your life.
